Lyminster Bypass Scheme Phase 1 Complete

Lyminster Bypass Scheme Phase 1 Complete

25 January 2021

Watch 9 months’ worth of work in 3 minutes as part of Enable Infrastructure’s (formerly known as BCM Construction) involvement on the Lyminster Bypass Scheme!

Enable Infrastructure are part of the Breheny led delivery team building the Fitzalan link road and Southern Lyminster bypass. Enable Infrastructure are responsible for the construction of the new overbridges at Toddington Lane and the Brighton to Littlehampton railway line.

There is a high volume of traffic using the A284 Lyminster Road over the existing railway level crossing to get into Littlehampton from the A27. Persimmon Homes are helping to solve this issue by constructing the Southern Section of the Lyminster Bypass. This is part of the new north-south access into the town to alleviate traffic along the Lyminster Road and the existing Lyminster level crossing. The new bypass will also add a dedicated pedestrian and cycle route going up to the Littlehampton Academy, town centre and the seafront.

The Toddington Lane bridge is a reinforced concrete structure with precast concrete bridge beams. It has a large reinforced concrete pad foundation and cast in-situ walls and deck. Construction of the bases and walls needed about 400 concrete lorries and 250T of steel reinforcement bars. The precast beams weighed 25T each and were brought over from Ireland. They were lifted in place during a night-time road closure using a 300T mobile crane.

The required work on the Toddington Lane North road overbridge are complete, with work now commencing on the rail overbridge. The whole project is set for completion by June 2021.
